As Gamescom ended, Square Enix has released the enhanced version for Final Fantasy VII that is currently available for download from finalfantasyviipc.com/en (the official website), for 10 euro.
What is new for this version?
First of all, it can be played on any monitor, no matter the resolution, it has almost HD videos, the cutscenes. These videos are not wide though but they have a very high quality. No more pixels in the videos like we had since 97 when the initial Final Fantasy VII was released.
After the intro is over, we can see that the graphics are the same, very poor, when roaming the map and also when fighting. The good thing is that using a high resolution, the game looks slightly better.
The buttons have been reassigned, we still use the “X” button for selecting and applying abilities, also interacting. Overall is good.
There is no need to remind about the achievements system, something that really the old school gamers are not into. Those who never heard about Final Fantasy VII before and never played it might be disappointed with the graphics but they will miss one of the greatest story ever told in a video game.
The characters are more alive even than real persons to quote someone I’ve read a long time ago on a gaming forum.
Square Enix will just have to release Final Fantasy X for PC if they have the resources to port the PS2 version, if they will make a high amount of money with this enhanced edition of Final Fantasy VII. Who knows..
